COURSE DESCRIPTION: In this course we will apply the principles of design to an electronic medium. Students will develop the skills necessary to digitally manipulate graphic images and text with Adobe Photoshop . Students will also learn the basics of Adobe Illustrator and how to integrate Photoshop materials with Illustrator documents.

OBJECTIVES: Students will learn to create digital images intended for print, the Internet and other media.  The course will provide students with opportunities to merge the technical with the creative, the result of which is electronic art.

ATTENDANCE: Each assignment is designed to lay a foundation for the next, so attendance is mandatory.

LAB: Students may need to schedule extra time to develop software skills and to complete assignments.  Four hours of lab outside class per week are recommended.  A total of two hours for all multimedia courses is required.  All students should also enroll in Art 638, a one-unit course that gives students lab access.

CLASS WORK: Students should save their work on a USB drive.  Additional storage may be necessary and recordableCD-ROMs are recommended.

EVALUATION AND GRADES: Assignments should demonstrate skillful and imaginative use of the medium.  Assignments will be evaluated based on successful communication of a concept, balanced composition and design, presentation and overall effect.  Frequent assignments are designed to reinforce class material.  Late assignments or projects will drop one letter grade for each week late.  This class is a portfolio-based class.  Students will also be graded for the completeness of a portfolio, effort, focus on details and adherence to due dates.

A. Participation and class work * 10% of final grade

B. Assignments * 70% of final grade

C. Final Project (with Portfolio Case and revised works) * 20% of final grade

PORTFOLIO: Work for the final portfolio may be prepared in class throughout the semester.  Print-outs of all assignments should be included in the portfolio, on standard letter paper or larger if desired.  Please purchase a black 8 1/2" x 11" standard letter size portfolio (Itoya is one brand) and place assignments and additional work in portfolio.  If you have made changes to a previous assignment, include a sheet of paper behind that assignment indicating the improvements that you have made.

The final portfolio should include:

• Utopian Family Assignment

• DADA photomontage

• Cyborg documentation (We will do this in class with a digital camera)

• Illustrator "Logos"

• Illustrator Poster

• Final Project/Documentation

• Mixed media experiment (*extra credit)

Assignments should be printed on either matte or glossy heavyweight paper (at least 44 lbs).  Experimentation in printing (with proper care for the equipment) is encouraged.  Sketchbook paper often gives a watercolor effect and is an acceptable substitute.
