Assignments and Projects: Assignment 1 Using the five family images, create a Mondrian-grid based on the properties of the De Stijl art movement. Remember, the concept is the Utopian Family. Your digital print should be 8 by 8 inches, with trimmed borders, mounted on black illustration board or matte board. Use photo glossy or photo matte paper (Epson paper works best with our Epson printers).
Assignment 2 Create a digital composite in the style of the DADA photomontage artists that we looked at in class. Use eight images, of which at least three reference media in the world today via news headlines and/or images. Specs: 6 by 9 inches (200 - 300 dpi) with trimmed borders mounted on black illustration or matte board (use spray mount). See cutandpaste.info
Create "offline robots" with digital prints mounted to materials of your choice. This project is in part a test of your 3-D skills and your digital 2-Ddesign skills!
Use Adobe Illustrator to create "logos" for a group of words we discussed in class. (Check the web page at www.missconceptions.net/mission/photoshop/11.htm if you forgot the words!)
Create a poster for the event: Flash Forward 2006 in Seattle. See the following web site for details: http://www.flashforward2004.com/default.asp The poster must include the name of the event, the date, location and a persuasive argument for attending the event. Students may use copy (words) from the web site and/or they may create their own slogans. The size of the poster should be 7 inches by 10 inches. The poster must abide Tschichold's principles from his book, New Typography. Therefore, it should be asymmetric and extremely economic (economy of language, economy of graphics, economy of color, etc.). See Examples
Create a fancy nonsensical machine using images from PhotoShop and drawing techniques in Illustrator. Students will have to use the tiling function in Illustrator in order to complete this assignment. The final project should be approximately 2 feet by 3 feet (or 3 feet by 2 feet, either orientation is fine). Students may work in black and white and paint on their printed pieces or students may work digitally and not affect their prints at all. The final print treatment is up to the creative direction of each student.
Participation Students will receive up to 10 points for participating in class discussions and critiques (formal and casual), for attending class regularly and behaving appropriately during demonstrations.
