We completed
projects 1 - 3 of the first chapter in the Adobe PhotoShop Classroom
In A Book (published by the Adobe Press), regarding the following:
using the PhotoShop interface, using and moving palettes, zooming in and out
of files, moving around files (especially when the image is greater than the
window in which it is contained--remember the Hand tool at the bottom right of
the tool palette?), making simple selections with the rectangular and elliptical
marquee tool, creating and editing type and moving selections and type around
the image. This week was an overview to the program and I do not expect
students to retain all that we reviewed in class!
Pixel vs. Vector
(I realized that we never actually talked about Vector graphics...we will
get to this during the semester!)
Bitmap
Pixel = picture element
DPI = Dots Per Inch (printing)
PPI = Pixels Per Inch (on screen)
HOMEWORK
This week students will find five images
that relate to her/his family, which we will scan in class on 2/17 (next
Wednesday). Both the notion of "images" and "family" are
free for your creative interpretation of these ideas. Students are encouraged
to bring objects that can be scaned (it needs to fit on about an 11 by
14 inch flatbed--think of the scanner as a xerox copy machine for now),
including materials/fabrics, newspaper images, magazine images, photographs,
etc. Try to think abstractly about how you remember your family when
your eyes are closed and you have only your memory to rely upon.
NEXT WEEK
In class we will review making selections, saving
and loading selections, more paintbrush options and moving images from
one file to another. Students will have time to work on the first assignment
in class.
