College Art Association

This weekend I closed up the Analog Interactivity show just after speaking on Michael Mandiberg’s panel, Artist as Startup: Web Application as Cultural Intervention at the College Art Association annual conference that took place here in Los Angeles. Michael provided as thorough a backdrop to the history of the current web-as-we-know-it that twenty minutes would allow. Then each panelist (Steve Lambert, Brooke Singer, Angie Waller, and myself) presented projects relating to his introductory remarks. One theme that emerged was how do web artists working at the intersection of consumer culture and web technologies identify in their role as artists, entrepreneurs, or a little bit of both?

Specific projects that were presented included Angie Waller’s My Frienemies, Steve Lambert’s Add-Art and my Mechanical Olympics. Brooke Singer spoke about a few of her works, including Purpool, Superfund 365, and Air. All of them are a click away from her website.
