Under the influence
of deconstructivist theory, Moira Gatens writes of the French Feminists, "one
of the most important struggles is to engage in the subversion of phallocentric
discourses and to foster a language that is able to express the specificity
of the feminine."
The Unporn Series is a photographic act of appropriation and
revision. In this series, the models of Playboy Magazine who
once posed for the pleasure of the viewer's gaze are the artists' material
for recombinant image production and aid a transitive approach to seeing pornography.
Selected photographs appearing in the soft-core Playboy Magazine are
cropped and printed anew on silver gelatin paper by way of digital production
processes and the black and white wet lab. During this combination of
digital and traditional photographic imaging methods, small and often
unseen areas of the set-up for Playboy's original photo session
are highlighted and investigated. The visual language of pornography
(specific to Playboy Magazine ) is revealed on the silver gelatin
prints in this series. The shift in cultural currency is seen in both
the cropping of the original images and the final materials used to present
the images. The original 8.5 by 11 inch glossy magazine prints are reprinted
on16 by 20 inch silver gelatin paper.
